Our law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to serve Alabama’s communities, and so it is important for me to talk with them directly to know how I can best advocate for them in Washington. With calls to defund the police and strip their qualified immunity growing louder and the increasing vilification of law enforcement, it's more critical than ever that our men and women in blue have someone fighting for them. I remain totally dedicated to supporting local law enforcement, and I sincerely appreciate all those who attended our panel today for an open discussion about how we can keep AL-02 safe.

The American people owe a great debt to our veterans, and Congress cannot let them down during this extremely emotional and painful period. The House Veterans Affairs Committee must reconvene immediately to examine the impacts of our failed Afghanistan retreat on the mental health of our veterans. Congress must send the clear message to all those who served that their sacrifices will never be forgotten and our joint resolve to support them is unshaken.

Today is a painfully dark day in our nation’s history, and we are all experiencing a whirlwind of emotions as we helplessly watch the deadly situation in Afghanistan continue to deteriorate. I ask all Americans to join me in praying for our countrymen and allies still trapped on the ground in Afghanistan. The United States has been delivered through many crises in our history, and I believe we will be again.

Serving the veterans who have served us is one of my highest priorities, and I am so thankful for all those who turned out to make this inaugural event a success.

Be ready, media. Be paying attention. Do your job. Do your job as the American media. Take off your DNC t-shirts and your DNC hats and get out your press credentials, go talk to your sources, and find out who’s driving this debacle in Afghanistan and the Department of State.
