Rep. Barry Moore works to give victims of human trafficking a second chance at life
Washington, D.C. — Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) co-sponsored the Trafficking Survivors Relief Act, sponsored by Congressman Russell Fry (R-SC). This bill provides federal criminal record relief for survivors of human trafficking who were compelled to commit offenses as a direct consequence of their victimization. Human traffickers often manipulate their victims into engaging in criminal activities, such as financial crimes, drug offenses, fraud, and identity theft, which support the traffickers' schemes.
This manipulation often leads to the arrest, detention, conviction, and even incarceration of these victims without recognition of their coerced circumstances. As a result, they are left with criminal records that carry significant collateral damage, impeding their ability to secure employment, find housing, and reintegrate into society.
'I'm proud to join my colleague Congressman Fry on this legislation to give human trafficking survivors a second chance at life," said Moore. "'Many of these victims were forced or coerced into committing crimes. Having a federal criminal record creates hurdles that prevent these survivors from successfully re-entering society as a result of their conviction. This legislation addresses this issue head-on by providing the support trafficking victims need to rebuild their lives."
