Rep. Barry Moore opposes non-tariff trade barriers on peanut imports
Washington, D.C. — Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) is leading a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) opposing any non-tariff trade barriers on peanut imports. Moore and the twelve House Republican cosigners expressed concern about the European Union requirement of increased aflatoxin testing on American peanut imports and request that USDA and USTR work with industry stakeholders to negotiate fair testing protocols. The current stringent testing is depressing the peanut trade market between the United States and the European Union.
“America's peanut farmers are already battling an energy and inflation crisis thanks to President Joe Biden and must not be forced to suffer trade policies that disadvantage domestic producers,” said Moore. "These dedicated producers have a long history of cooperating with USDA to ensure safe, nutritious products, and they should not face testing standards which imply otherwise and act as another barrier to their success."
Co-signers of Moore’s letter are Rep. Austin Scott (GA-08), Rep. Trent Kelly (MS-01), Rep. Virginia Foxx (NC-05), Rep. Drew Ferguson (GA-03), Rep. David Rouzer (NC-12), Rep. Mike Rogers (AL-03), Rep. Ronny Jackson (TX-13), Rep. Rick Allen (GA-12), Rep. Dan Bishop (NC-08), Rep. Buddy Carter (GA-01), Rep. Jeff Duncan (SC-03), and Rep. Neal Dunn (FL-02).
