Rep. Barry Moore leads letter to President Biden demanding action to stop fentanyl crisis

December 6, 2022

Washington, D.C. — Today Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) led a letter to President Joe Biden criticizing his administration’s lack of action stopping fentanyl from pouring through our southern border and pledging to oppose any FY2023 appropriations package unless immediate action is taken “to strengthen and restore the integrity of the southern border and protect the American people, especially our children, from deadly fentanyl.” The letter was originally reported by Breitbart.

“If they could, every single drug trafficker south of the border would vote for Joe Biden for president. Biden’s policies have devastated our border and fueled a never-before-seen explosion in the illegal trafficking of drugs, especially deadly fentanyl, into communities across the U.S. No one is outside of the reach of this deadly drug," said Rep. Moore to Breitbart. “President Biden must take concrete actions to reverse these trends and implement policies to strengthen border integrity – which must include building a wall – and end the demonization of law enforcement.

"Our border is at the breaking point, and Congress must protect our children by standing firm and demanding action.”

Moore and his colleagues request that President Biden resume construction of President Trump's border wall, rescind his executive orders that dismantled President Trump's successful immigration policies, show support for our law enforcement officers by meeting with Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and permanently classify fentanyl as a Schedule I drug to make permanent the additional resources afforded law enforcement to respond swiftly and appropriately to this drug.

Signing Rep. Moore’s letter are Reps. Ralph Norman (SC-05), Pete Sessions (TX-17), Andy Biggs (AZ-05), Jim Banks (IN-03), Mary Miller (IL-15), Andrew Clyde (GA-09), Paul Gosar (AZ-04), Alex Mooney (WV-02), Greg Steube (FL-17), and Ronny Jackson (TX-13).

BACKGROUND:

Over the course of a twelve-month period ending in May 2022, more than 100,000 Americans died from overdose of synthetic opioids, which primarily consisted of fentanyl. Fentanyl is the number one killer of adults 18-45.

According to the DEA, China has been the main source of fentanyl illegally trafficked into the United States.

President Biden has yet to visit the border during his time in office, and Border Czar Kamala Harris has only made one trip near the border in June of 2021.
