Rep. Barry Moore introduces the Stopping Traffickers and Their Accomplices Act

May 17, 2024

Washington, D.C.- Today, Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) introduced the Stopping Traffickers and Their Accomplices (STATA) Act. This legislation requires abortion providers to know the signs of trafficking and notify the National Human Trafficking Hotline of victims of trafficking. This legislation is co-sponsored by Reps. Robert Aderholt (AL-04), Brian Babin (TX-36), Don Bacon (NE-02), Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), Byron Donalds (FL-19), Michael Guest (MS-03), Doug Lamborn (CO-05), Alex Mooney (WV-02), Gary Palmer (AL-06), Mike Rogers (AL-03) and Matt Rosendale (MT-02). It is also supported by Heritage Action for America, National Right to Life, Students for Life Action, Concerned Women for America, and Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

"For too long, abortion has been a tool for traffickers to continue their abuse of women and girls," said Moore. "This legislation ensures abortion providers know how to spot the signs of human trafficking and report trafficking when they see it so these victims can get help and traffickers can be brought to justice."

"The corrupt partnership between human and sex traffickers with the abortion industry is well known, an ugly relationship that needs to be stopped to protect women caught in the crossfire. Abortion is an avenue for traffickers to continue their horrific abuse of women and girls. The abortion industry must be held accountable for aiding and abetting traffickers, and any opposition to this humanitarian bill will show that abortion's financial interests are being placed about the needs of women. The Stopping Traffickers and Their Accomplices Act is a great step towards preventing the abortion industry from profiting off of sex trafficking and ignoring the crimes they may be facilitating. Students for Life Action asks Congress to support this commonsense effort to stop the exploitation of women.” - Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life of America and Students for Life Action

“Abortion facilities should be required by law to protect victims, but the Left’s dogmatic support for unfettered, automatic abortions-on-demand has created a dangerous environment for women. These facilities should report suspected trafficking to authorities instead of aiding and abetting traffickers by turning a blind eye to abuse and coercion. The Stopping Traffickers and Their Accomplices Act is an essential and long-overdue bill that requires abortion providers to exercise due diligence and protect women put in harm’s way.” - Janae Stracke, Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy, Heritage Action

"National Right to Life applauds Rep. Moore for introducing the Stopping Traffickers and Their Accomplices Act. Evidence shows that women often feel pressured or coerced into seeking abortion. This problem is made worse by the reluctance of a financially-driven abortion industry to report suspected abuse of women. This important legislation would require abortion providers to report suspected human trafficking and would require training to recognize the signs of trafficking. National Right to Life supports this life-saving legislation." - Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life

"Sex trafficking is a horrific crime that traumatizes victims for life. Ending the partnership between traffickers and the abortion industry is an important step towards rooting out this evil. By allowing traffickers to coerce their victims into getting abortions against their will, abortion providers in America make it easier for these criminals to continually violate and exploit vulnerable women and girls. The Stopping Traffickers and their Accomplices Act is all about protecting women from the evil cycle of abuse perpetrated by traffickers and enabled by their partners in the abortion industry.” - Penny Nance, CEO and President of Concerned Women for America, the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization

“Far too often, the profit-driven abortion industry has been caught covering up abuse—even transporting minors across state lines without their parents knowing—and siding with traffickers over women and girls. Abortion businesses must be held accountable for reporting suspected trafficking, since they will not regulate themselves,” said the Hon. Marilyn Musgrave, vice president of government affairs at SBA Pro-Life America. "Nearly a quarter of women who’ve had abortions describe them as unwanted or coerced, and this is just the tip of the iceberg of silent suffering. Trafficking survivors deserve a lifeline to freedom and healing, not forced abortions with no questions asked. Thank you, Rep. Barry Moore, for standing with women and girls across America." - Hon. Marilyn Musgrave, Vice President of Government Affairs at Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America
