Rep. Barry Moore: Americans are sick of Congress bleeding them dry with waste and pet projects

November 18, 2021

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives warning against the unprecedented government spending of President Biden's tax-and-spend agenda that continues to fuel the rising prices hammering working Americans. Moore cautions politicians not to risk the fiscal health of the nation for their own short-term political benefit.

Moore's remarks as prepared are below:

"I rise today alarmed by the unprecedented wasteful spending from Washington that is fueling inflation and risking the future of our Republic.

"Early this year, the Democrats forced through $1.9 trillion in so-called COVID relief with only 9 percent going toward public health funding. At the time, nearly $1 trillion of allocated COVID relief funds remained unspent. Despite the bill’s name, only 9 percent of this funding went towards public health. Oh, and $140 million went to a Silicon Valley subway in Speaker Pelosi’s backyard.

"Just last week, Congress passed a $1.2 trillion “infrastructure” bill. Despite that bill’s characterization, less than 10 percent of it went to traditional infrastructure like roads and bridges. Oh, and $200 million went to a park in Speaker Pelosi’s backyard.

"According to the New York Times, certainly no ally of Republicans, the Democrats’ reconciliation bill before us this week includes 'a $4.1 billion tax break for people who buy electric bicycles, $2.5 billion for ‘tree equity,’ another $2.5 billion to help ‘contingency fee’ lawyers recoup their expenses, and a long-sought tax break for producers of sound recordings.'

"The article concludes that '[m]any obscure provisions may emerge as subjects of ridicule, but Democrats are not shying away from their work. Every single niche has a constituency that regards it as central.'

"Madam Speaker, this captures exactly what is wrong with Washington. Too many politicians up here will gladly endorse trillions in new spending if a few pennies of pork come back to their district. They put their political futures above their own nation.

"Well, I am sick of it. And the American people are too. Congress is bleeding the American people dry with waste and pet projects it claims is being spent in their best interests.

"Sure, I would love for the federal government to build a new road in my district. But I refuse to sacrifice the health and viability of this nation to get it. And most patriotic Americans agree with me.

"Roads and bridges will come and go. But if we foolishly squander the nation our forefathers fought so hard to create, if we selfishly allow this great American experiment to die because of our own greed, shame on us, because we will have ultimately failed those who elected us to fight for their best interests."
