ICYMI: Rep. Barry Moore advocates for FISA warrant requirement

February 16, 2024

Washington, D.C. - This week, Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) participated in a House Freedom Caucus press conference to discuss the need for true Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) reform that includes a warrant requirement. The FBI has been using legal loopholes to turn Section 702 into a domestic spying authority, allowing these agencies to conduct hundreds of thousands of warrantless searches for Americans' private communications every year. The FBI used FISA Section 702 to spy on President Trump's campaign.

From Moore's statement:

Rep. Moore: "The FBI has used FISA 702, which is meant for gathering intel on foreign nationals, hundreds of thousands of times, to spy on American citizens without a warrant. Instead of focusing outwardly on America's enemies, they're focusing inwardly on the American people."

"Why would we, as Congress, authorize an NDAA, which attaches its FISA reauthorization, to spy on American citizens in an election year, certainly with an embattled political campaign going on for both sides, and we know they spied on Trump.

"So, it just does not make sense. I think our job up here, as most of us know, is to protect your liberty, folks. This was bipartisan out of the judiciary. When we brought this bill out, both sides saw the dangers that we were facing as American citizens. Our job is to protect your liberty. We have to hold the line."
