Protecting student athletes and Universities

This past month, Rep. Russell Fry and I introduced the Protect the Benefits for Athletes and Limit Liability (BALL) Act. The Protect the BALL Act addresses the onslaught of litigation universities and conferences face relating to student-athletes’ ability to receive compensation based on their name, image, and likeness (NIL).  The Protect the BALL Act changes the game for more than 500,000 student athletes across our country by allowing schools to provide new benefits for them and comply with the law. Universities should be able to preserve and extend these opportunities for their student athletes without risk of litigation, and this legislation ensures they can continue to do so.

Stopping traffickers and their accomplices

For too long, abortion has been a tool for traffickers to continue their abuse of women and girls. That is why I introduced the Stopping Traffickers and Their Accomplices (STATA) Act. This legislation requires abortion providers to know the signs of trafficking and notify the National Human Trafficking Hotline of victims of trafficking. This legislation ensures abortion providers know how to spot the signs of human trafficking and report trafficking when they see it so these victims can get help and traffickers can be brought to justice.

Reinforcing the principles of fairness and justice

More than 5.8 million vehicles were recalled by General Motors in 2014 with manufacturing defects that led to injuries and deaths, but the right to collect damages from accidents before the 2009 auto bailout was given away when a court case decided that the government bailout shielded them from liability. Rep. Troy Carter (LA-02) and I introduced the Auto Bailout Accident Victims Recovery Act to put an end to this longstanding injustice. This legislation waives the statute of limitations for cases against the government related to the General Motors bailout that were filed on or before July 9, 2015.

The Let Trump Speak Act

This past month, I co-sponsored the Let Trump Speak Act, led by Rep. Andy Ogles (TN-05). This bill prohibits any judge from issuing a gag order to the defendant in any criminal or civil proceeding and guarantees a right of action to defendants who are issued a gag order in violation of this Act. Prosecutors and judges have been weaponized against Trump across the nation and it’s time Congress put Americans first and protected their First Amendment rights. This legislation is a step in the right direction to ensure that those sacred rights are protected.

No funding redirection from Fort Novosel

My staff and I were recently briefed by several General Officers from the U.S. Army, who assured us that no funds will be diverted from Fort Novosel in the wake of social media rumors of funding limitations that began circulating in early May. I was very pleased to hear that no funds have been diverted and that no training programs will be disrupted at Fort Novosel. I will continue to fight for accountability and transparency in how taxpayer dollars are used by the Army and other government agencies, while also ensuring that our military is ready to meet the demands of an increasingly hostile world.

End noncitizen voting in D.C.

If you are in the United States illegally, you do not have the right to vote in any of our elections. I recently voted in support of H.R. 192, a bill that prohibits noncitizens from voting in elections in the District of Columbia. This legislation is sponsored by Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX) and repeals the District of Columbia Council’s enactment of the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022 (D.C. Law 24-242). This law gives non-citizen residents the right to vote in local elections.

Detain and deport illegal aliens who assault law enforcement officers

The third week of May is nationally recognized as National Police Week and this year I voted in favor of the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens who Assault Cops Act during National Police Week. An illegal alien who attacks our law enforcement shows no respect for our rule of law or institutions and should be removed immediately. Thanks to Biden's open border policies, this law is necessary to protect those who put their lives on the line daily to keep American families safe.

The 2024 Farm Bill passed through committee

The long awaited 2024 Farm Bill  finally made its way out of the House Agriculture Committee. The legislation included several of my priorities to help Alabama producers. I am pleased to see the fruition of the 2024 Farm Bill, and especially pleased to see the support for vital farm programs and safety net programs that are vital to Alabama agriculture. Since the last Farm Bill we passed, farmers, foresters, ranchers, and producers have fought tooth and nail to stay afloat during the Biden administration. This legislation puts the farm back in Farm Bill.
