The Moore You Know Ag Update

Hi, friends –
It has been a busy month on Capitol Hill and in Alabama’s Second District. As Members have returned from Easter recess, I am pleased to share great news that we are inching closer to a Farm Bill reauthorization.
Now that we have final passage of all appropriations for the rest of the year, Chairman Thompson and the House Agriculture Committee have signaled that we plan to move legislation by Memorial Day.
With the current one-year extension, farmers and producers can still operate until a fully processed Bill is completed. Throughout this year, I have heard and seen your concerns as you have tried to keep up with the demands of the industry while fighting inflationary pressures and natural disasters. It is my prayer that we will complete the Farm Bill as soon as possible, so we can provide real relief.

Committee Happenings

This month, I participated in a House Agriculture Committee Special Order on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
I discussed the economic challenges that agricultural producers are facing under the Biden Administration. I emphasized the need to address current reference prices in this Farm Bill cycle to ensure agricultural producers have a safety net and can manage the risks associated with rising input prices and declining commodity prices. Down in the District
Our domestic shrimpers are struggling to stay afloat due to foreign competition. Recently, it was reported that U.S. taxpayer dollars are being used to finance foreign shrimp farm operations through International Financial Institutions (IFIs), which is contributing to the demise of our nation’s shrimping industry.
To combat this, I co-sponsored H.R. 7932, the bipartisan Save Our Shrimpers Act of 2024 with Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas. This industry gives Alabama a vital healthy food source and sustains good-paying jobs, from boat crews to processing teams to distributors. This legislation helps our shrimpers battle the lower quality, foreign imported shrimp saturating the market that is making it difficult for them to stay in business.

HPAI News
As you may know, several cases of highly-pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been found across many dairy cattle herds in the U.S. Animal health is a top priority of mine as we heavily rely on the livestock and poultry industry. I am eager to continue working towards increasing traceability efforts and encouraging animal health solutions that strike a balance between disease management and producer implementation.

EPA Overreach
I recently co-sponsored H.R. 7900, The EPA Accountability to Farm Country Act with Rep. Brad Finstad of Minnesota. This legislation would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and farmer stakeholders to review rules and regulations proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that may impact the agricultural sector and provide recommendations on how to limit the impact. If EPA does not mitigate the effect of their proposed rule, it would be unable to be finalized.
I am confident that this legislation will help our farmers, foresters, and producers as they fight the Biden Administration’s bureaucratic red tape.
