The Trump assassination attempt

Last week, former President Donald Trump came within millimeters of losing his life at the hands of a would-be assassin who managed to come within 150 meters of the stage Trump was speaking on.

This security failure is unacceptable.

President Trump’s assailant first paced around the edges of the campaign rally in Butler, shouldering a giant backpack and peeking into the lens of his rangefinder. Local law enforcement took notice and radioed their concern in but were unable to find him by the time they started looking around.

Somehow the potential assassin was able to climb up a ladder on the side of a squat manufacturing building within 135 meters from the stage. The now-resigned Secret Service Director Cheatle claimed the roof of the building was too step for the Secret Service to secure, but my 70-year-old colleague Rep. Gimenez was able to climb the roof and stand easily during a trip to the site this week.

How did a suspicious looking person manage to climb a ladder and place himself so close to a former President and current candidate?

The American people deserve answers.

House Republicans attempted to get answers this week during an Oversight Committee hearing with now former Director Cheatle, but she refused to provide any substantive responses. Cheatle did say that “sufficient security resources were provided” on the day of the attempted assassination.

How can that possibly be the truth?

Rally attendees David Dutch and James Copenhaver were seriously injured, and Corey Comperatore was killed while shielding his family from gunfire. I hope you will join me in praying for their families.

This week, I voted in support of creating a bipartisan task force to investigate these failures and ensure they never happen again. It’s nothing short of a miracle from God that President Trump is still here with us. The task force will have subpoena power, move swiftly to find the facts, and hold people accountable accordingly so the American people get the answers they deserve.
