Front view of the Capitol

The Moore You Know Column: January 4 - 13

Column

On January 6th, America witnessed an unprecedented breach of our nation’s historic Capitol. I have always strongly condemned political violence, whether it’s last week’s lawlessness or the Antifa and Black Lives Matters protests last summer.

I’m grateful for the Capitol Police and other law enforcement officers who bravely defended the Capitol. My heart breaks for the loss of USCP Officer Brian Sicknick who died from injuries sustained during the chaos and I encourage you to pray for his family.

Standing on the House floor on January 3rd, I swore to uphold the Constitution and serve the great people of Alabama’s Second Congressional District. I do not take this oath lightly.

I hoped my first actions in Congress would be focused on helping President Trump continue to strengthen America and defend conservative values. I never dreamed I would instead have to start by voting against a hyper-partisan House rules package and defending the President from politically-motivated attacks.
                                                                                                                       ***
I joined dozens of my House colleagues to object to accepting the electoral college votes from states with clear voting irregularities, using the Constitution as our guide. This is a process that Democrats have used this in the past in 2005 and 2017.

While we were not successful, restoring election integrity is a topic that several of my fellow Republican freshman are also focused on. Alabama leads the nation in ensuring that only legal votes are counted, and I will point to our policies as examples for other states to follow.
                                                                                                                       ***
I might be new to Congress, but I know a political stunt when I see one. Democrats pushed through a resolution pressuring Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th amendment which would remove President Trump from office, despite knowing Pence had already said he would not take this step.

Why would they do that? To sow more division.

This wasn’t enough to please the radical left. With just seven days left in office and a promise from President Trump ensuring a peaceful transfer of power, Democrats impeached the President for a second time. No investigation. Not a single hearing.

This set a dangerous precedent and cheapened the very serious impeachment process. Furthermore, it reveals Congressional Democrats’ calls for unity to be completely disingenuous
                                                                                                                       ***
Last week I was targeted by Big Tech when Twitter suspended my personal account. Conservative censorship is nothing new and I had long considered taking down my account, so I decided to just delete my personal Twitter after it was suspended.

The steps taken in recent days to silence conservative voices, including President Trump’s, crossed a line I could not ignore. This is an issue I will be exploring to see what can be done to preserve our Constitutional right to free speech and hold Big Tech accountable.

I’m honored to defend the views and values of the Alabamians I proudly represent, whether it’s protecting the unborn, securing our borders or reining in Washington’s runaway spending. My faith and your prayers will provide strength and guidance in the long and difficult road ahead. It’s been a terribly long week, but as the great Robert Frost once said, “I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.”
