Rep. Barry Moore introduces legislation to rename Dothan post office after Alabama veteran LaBruce Tidwell

November 1, 2023

Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) introduced legislation to rename the United States Post Office located at 379 N Oates Street in Dothan as the LaBruce 'Bruce' Tidwell Post Office. Alabama Reps. Robert Aderholt, Jerry Carl, Gary Palmer, Mike Rogers, Terri Sewell, and Dale Strong are co-sponsors of this legislation.

Bruce Tidwell enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served as a Radio Operator on the LCT 801. Born and raised in Dothan, AL, Bruce returned to Dothan after the war ended in 1945 and began working in the Dothan Oil Mill. After a few years, Bruce wanted to continue serving his community and decided to become a letter carrier in 1957.

“From the radio room to the mail room, Navy veteran Bruce Tidwell was dedicated to serving his state and his country," said Moore. "Bruce was known for altering his usual mail route during the Vietnam War in order to ensure the families of service members received their letters home as quickly as possible because he knew how much that would mean to those families."

Bruce was beloved by the Dothan community, where he lived for a total of 86 years. There is no better Post Office to rename than the exact location in Dothan where Bruce worked.
